Animated films are hitting big this year: Zootopia crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide,Finding Dory hit $300 million in 12 days, and The Secret Life of Pets is predicted to pull in $70 million on its first weekend. Laika’s upcoming animated feature, Kubo and the Two Strings, is scheduled for U.S. release on Aug. 19; will it keep the summer box office animated all the way through Labor Day? A new trailer (watch it above) gives us our latest clues.
Kubo and the Two Strings follows its titular hero (Art Parkinson) on a quest to save his family and discover the mysterious secret about his father. Joining Kubo are Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey). While learning more about magical powers he inherited from his mother, Kubo accidentally summons a vengeful spirit (Rooney Mara) from his past.
The new trailer for Kubo promises a very different style and story from the cartoonish, sentimental plots that filled the year’s Disney and Pixar animated films. The stunning animation, eclectic plot, and dark tone are characteristic of Laika features, which include favorites like Coraline, Paranorman, and The Boxtrolls.
