HBO Documentary Films is directing its attention towards the West African Ebola outbreak next month by releasing a special presentation of three short films about the subject, including “Ebola: The Doctors’ Story,” “Orphans of Ebola” and the Academy Award-nominated “Body Team 12.”

Each documentary short follows a new perspective and subject, trailing the doctors, response teams and orphaned children who struggle against the rapidly spreading disease. Individual film descriptions are as follows, courtesy of HBO Documentary Films.

“Body Team 12”
This year’s Academy Award-nominated film highlights the heroic and heartbreaking work of a female Liberian Red Cross worker tasked with collecting the dead from homes and villages, removing the bodies to halt transmission of the disease. In a tightrope act of high-risk filmmaking, director-journalist David Darg, embedded with the Red Cross on the ground in Monrovia, Liberia during the height of the Ebola outbreak. The filmmakers capture devastating and poignant images that reveal the Ebola crisis through the story of Garmai Sumo, the sole female member of the body collection team. Darg edited the film in full quarantine for three weeks.
“Ebola: The Doctors’ Story”
Filmmaker Steven Grandison’s documentary follows a British emergency response doctor inside a Doctors Without Borders Ebola treatment center at the height of the epidemic in Sierra Leone. Dr. Javid Abdelmoneim fights for the survival of his patients, who are women, men, babies and children alike, and connects with each of their personal stories as he helps families to reunite, or to cope.

“Orphans of Ebola”
Filmmaker Ben Steele’s short follows Abu, a 12-year-old boy from a village in Sierra Leone, who loses eight members of his family and must restart his life elsewhere. Abu illustrates the incredible bravery of the thousands of children who have been orphaned by Ebola as they reconcile with the past and forge new lives.

The three documentary shorts will air on HBO on March 14. Watch the exclusive trailer above.
