After the giant popularity (and eventual annoyance) of Frozen, Disney hopes to repeat the same success with Moana, their latest addition to the Disney princess line. Most of the hype surrounding the film is due to the heroine’s Polynesian heritage, making her one of the few non-white Disney princesses.
Directed by the team behind The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, John Musker and Ron Clements, Moana follows the titular teenage girl who sets sail to fulfill her ancestors’ quest with the help of Dwayne Johnson‘s demi-god Maui. Fresh off of the Tonys and Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda co-authored the songs for newcomer Auli’i Cravalho (who voices Moana).
The new trailer shows baby Moana playing with the ocean — and the ocean playing back. Although the plot is vague, it is clear based on the current footage that magical elements greatly feature in Moana, in line with other Disney princess movies as well. The Japanese trailer highlights the incredible and beautiful animation, instead of a long monologue that introduced the previous teaser.
Moana sails into theaters on Nov. 23. Watch the international trailer above.
