Open Road Films has acquired the U.S. rights to The Promise, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year. Director Terry George also helmed Hotel Rwanda, a similar movie about the Rwanda Genocide.

The Promise stars Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon and Christian Bale and is set during the Armenian Genocide. Isaac stars as an Armenian medical student who competes with Bale, an American journalist, for the love of a French artist played by Le Bon (Anthropoid)

“We are proud to add this prestigious film to our 2017 slate,” said Open Road’s Tom Ortenberg. “An epic love story set against a turning point in world history, The Promise features top-notch performances and first-class filmmaking and we are looking forward to sharing the movie with audiences across the country.”

Open Road has announced an April 28, 2017 release date for The Promise. Watch the first trailer below.
